Job Spotlight: Order Filler

Diligence, organization, and independence
—these are the watchwords for order pickers at Logisseo!

A warehouse containing shelves and merchandise

The order picker, also known as a fulfillment operator, is a professional responsible for gathering the products and items purchased online by individuals or stores in order to ship. The job requires good organizational skills and a commitment to customer service, as the order picker represents the company’s image through the quality of the package sent.

The daily tasks of a order picker

Order packing by a picker

Picking, as it is commonly known, is a crucial step in order fulfillment. To perform this task, the order picker must follow a specific route. This precise routehelps minimize the number of steps, optimize time, and reduce musculoskeletal disorders (this is warehouse manager who designs it according to a specific method).

To carry out this task, the order picker uses a handheld terminal, also known as a HT, as well as a picking cart that allows them to pick products to fulfill multiple orders at once. The HT provides access to information about the various orders to be prepared, such as the list of items to be picked and their respective quantities.

The order processor must therefore strictly follow the instructions provided by the TP to fulfill orders within the specified time frame.

Once picking is complete , the order picker must move on to the next step: packing the orders. This step involves preparing packages or pallets according to each customer’s specific instructions, which are outlined in a set of specifications.

These specifications may contain important information regarding order customization. At Logisseo, we offer a wide range of customization options: tissue paper, handwritten notes, a touch of fragrance, special packaging… a real boost for your brand image!

Next, to reduce the use of cardboard and optimize shipping, the order picker must choose the right packaging size (so as not to put a very small item in a very large box!). They then carefully pad the items with packing material to prevent breakage and ensure they arrive in good condition in the buyer’s hands.

All that’s left is to weigh the order to print the shipping label, and the delivery note if it hasn’t been digitized. The order is then distributed among the shipping carts, with one cart assigned to each carrier. Logisseo works with nearly 10 carriers to deliver throughout France and around the world!

The skills needed to be a good order picker

As a order picker, you need to have a number of skills, which you acquire through experience or training:

  • Packaging in boxes or on pallets
  • Using business software and a handheld device
  • Compliance with procedures (packaging, preparation, etc.)

These skills are essential to ensuring the quality and safety of order-picking operations .

In addition to technical skills, certain interpersonal skills are real assets for order pickers who work in teams, especially in an environment that requires constant vigilance:

  • the dynamism
  • team spirit
  • the organization
  • versatility
  • accuracy
  • regularity
  • aesthetic sense

These skills make it easier to manage daily tasks and also improve relationships with others!

What training and qualifications are required to become an order picker?

No specific degree is required to become an order picker, but there are still vocational training programs that lead to certification. Some schools also offer the CAP in Logistics Operations, the Vocational Baccalaureate in Logistics, or the BTS in Transportation and Logistics Services.

At Logisseo, many employees worked in fields completely unrelated to logistics before joining the company. For example, one of our employees used to be a tour guide!

The CSR aspect of the order picker role

The order picker must follow the CSR approach on the ground, for example by ensuring strict compliance with the rules for sorting recyclable materials.

At Logisseo, order pickers are also challenged to use materials efficiently: they must select the most appropriate packaging and cushioning for each order to minimize waste and use as many reused boxes as possible from the supply made available to them. They must also follow safety guidelines to prevent workplace accidents!

An order picker can advance to a lead picker position and thus take on greater responsibilities.

At Logisseo, several order pickers have been able to advance and become supervisors after several years. This is particularly true for Johanna, Christine, and Renan, whose testimonials you can find in our article on the role of lead order picker!

The trainee operator also has the opportunity to advance within the company by moving to another department, such as becoming a stock manager or a receiving clerk.
